Meet Louis

When over 1,500 people arrived to Sunset Park at last month's Health Empowerment Celebration (HEC) the people there to welcome them were volunteers like Louis, who spent the day helping RaisingHealth's largest event of the year run smoothly. Louis started the summer as a RaisingHealth intern, and planning HEC became part of his tasks. By event day, he was coordinating volunteers, welcoming community members, and managing the line at the food distribution.

We sat down with Louis to hear about the work behind the event, what he took away from it, and why he keeps coming back to RaisingHealth.

Louis first came to RaisingHealth through a friend. “I first got into RaisingHealth as a volunteer when my friend recommended this place for volunteering, as volunteer hours are a requirement for my school.”

Louis stayed for the people. “What makes me keep coming back would be the people that I work with,” he said, giving a shout-out to the staff who put in so much work preparing for the event. “Compared to school work, I have a natural passion to volunteer at RaisingHealth.”

Preparing for HEC

Louis’s main job in the lead-up was preparing and packing the equipment for the event, including banners, utensils and most of the materials for each station. He also recruited volunteers by emailing schools, universities and other organizations. When he and his fellow volunteers inventoried supplies, he guided other volunteers on what to count, since he knew the office space and where items were kept.

What surprised him most was how much it takes to put on an event like this. “I guess for a task that surprised me would be the large amount of materials needed for HEC.”

The experience taught him new skills, too. “One skill I would ‘quote-unquote’ learn would be management skills, coordinating skills.”

Event Day

Louis arrived at the park that day at 8 AM. Some volunteers were already there, and the team got straight to work setting up tables for the event’s partners. When the next U-Haul truck arrived with scissors, chairs, activity and raffle supplies, Louis directed volunteers to unload it and carry items to the tables.

Around 10 AM, food began arriving from the packing site, and Louis took the lead, splitting his volunteers into two groups, one to help pack the remaining food and the other to bring ready grocery bags up to the food distribution station.

In the quiet hour before distribution began at 1 PM, Louis worked with RaisingHealth Lead Community Health Partner, Edwin and Food Care Coordinator, Ana Karen, on a plan for the line. Louis managed the front, checking people in and handing community members their items.

“For my side I’ll admit, it was pretty energetic,” Louis said. With the help of Louis and volunteers like him, RaisingHealth distributed 360 bags of fresh, culturally tailored groceries our community members.

Looking back, he said, “I definitely felt greatly accomplished when the event was over.” The moment he expects to remember a year from now is the group photo of volunteers and staff at the end of the day, along with “the massive success and planning that was needed for that day.”

What Volunteering Has Meant

Volunteering has changed how Louis thinks about health. “Volunteering has made me think more about how the health system works, and it got me interested in a healthcare profession.”

His advice to other young people thinking about volunteering is simple. “Volunteering can be a fun thing to do,” he said. “The main things that I like about volunteering here would be the conversations, and the people you get to meet. I would heavily encourage someone in that position to volunteer.”

Asked what RaisingHealth’s mission means to him, he said: “It is something that is like a dream. Something that will probably not come true within our lifetimes, but something that we can push closer to.”

He’s proud of how he led volunteers at HEC. “I’m most proud of how I managed the volunteers and how I coordinated them,” he said. He added that he hopes to improve his communication next year.

We at RaisingHealth were very happy to hear that he’s planning to help us again next year.

Conozca a Louis

Louis
